EP. 490: Why You Blow It When It Finally Happens

There’s a moment in every hunt that matters more than all the scouting, all the prep, all the miles you put in. It’s the one where the deer finally shows up.

And if you’ve done this long enough, you know it doesn’t always go the way you thought it would. Your heart rate jumps, your breathing changes, and all of a sudden you’re not thinking as clearly as you were ten minutes before. You rush something, force something, or just come unglued for a second.

I’ve been there more times than I’d like to admit.

This episode is about that moment—what actually happens when pressure hits, and why most of us aren’t as prepared for it as we think we are. Not from a gear or setup standpoint, but mentally. Being present, staying composed, and letting the moment play out instead of trying to control it.

A lot of it connects back to things I’ve learned on the jiu-jitsu mat. Same kind of pressure, just in a different setting. When things tighten up, your instinct is to react fast, to get out of it. But the guys who are good at it don’t panic. They slow down, breathe, and make better decisions because of it.

Hunting’s no different.

If you can learn to recognize that feeling when it shows up—and not fight it, but work through it—you give yourself a better chance when it actually counts. Because in the end, that one moment is usually what it all comes down to.

WHAT TO EXPECT FROM PODCAST 490

  • Most hunting mistakes happen under pressure, not from lack of skill.
  • If you don’t train for pressure, you’ll default to panic when it matters.
  • Presence and patience are what separate clean execution from rushed decisions.
  • Pressure doesn’t create problems, it exposes them.
  • The best hunters slow down when things speed up.
  • Learning to sit in discomfort leads to better decisions.
  • Consistency comes from managing the moment, not forcing it.

EP. 356: Chasing Mature Mountain Bucks | North Idaho | Jake Kremer

Today I’m joined by my buddy Jake Kremer owner of North Idaho Archery. Jake is an outlier in Idaho. Most folks in the west are die-hard elk hunters. While Jake filled his tag on an Idaho bull this year…he’s admittedly a more die-hard mountain whitetail hunter than an elk hunter. I’ve hunted the area Jake calls home. Rarely do I do an episode where both the guest and I have some knowledge of the exact same areas. it was cool to talk about some of the whitetail sign I saw while in the Idaho mountains and talk through what the hunt options might be for those areas. Hope you all dig the discussion as much as I did – thanks for listening.

Weekly Harvest: 2/17/17

Weekly Harvest

It’s Friday…I think we can all be thankful for that!

This weekend I’ll be getting an official dose of outdoor medicine. As you’re reading this I’ll be headed back to our farm to scout some of the public ground that is near our property. From the aerials I’ve studied and the drive-by I’ve done, the area looks promising. My plan is to get a closer look on Saturday w/a boots on the ground scout. I’ll post some footage on Facbook live ,and look for a Youtube video in the near future documenting the scout.

The second plan is to do a little shed hunting in a few key location on the farm and do a card pull to see if any bucks made it through gun season. I’m pumped to be getting back in the timber! Until next time, enjoy this week’s deer news!

When The Hunt For A Target Buck Is Over—Diego: I can’t say I’ve had the pleasure to chasing a particular buck for multiple seasons however, these animals are special and the emotion of the chase and harvest is real.

Deer Hunting Success Favors Students: The timber is my classroom…

New Non Typical Whitetail Record Upheld: I couldn’t imagine seeing this while in a stand.

In This Incredible Age, What Defines The Modern Hunter: Something to ponder to pass the time on stand this fall.

Weekly Harvest: 6/3/16

Weekly Harvest

Happy Friday all!

Hope everyone had a nice Memorial Day weekend. I got to spend a lot of time on the farm and finished up planting the remaining food plots. I did get to get after a few birds and took my 7 year-old-daughter on her first hunt…she even used the call and had a bird respond! She was pretty excited even though we had no shot opportunities. My buddy, on the other hand, took a nice PA gobbler. So on the whole we ended the season on a good note.

Lots of family activity this weekend. But before the fun begins I’ll leave you with the week’s best deer related stories from around the world whitetail web—enjoy!

Fawns Can Tell A Story: Good way to get a better idea of when the rut will hit in your area.

Bobcat Climbs Hunter’s Tree Stand: I’d prefer to avoid anything climbing the tree I’m in.

It’s Time To Get Moving On Mineral Sites For Deer: It’s not too late to get your mineral stations out.

Clover—The Magic Bean Of Food Plots?: I don’t know that it’s magic, but my clover plot looks awesome this year!

Science Behind The Need (Or Not) For Deer Minerals: What is the real reason for deer mineral use? Just in this Weekly Harvest alone we have two articles on slightly opposite sides of the fence when it comes to deer mineral usage.
