Today I’m joined by my buddy Mike Perry from Pennsylvania. I haven’t had Mike on in a while and it’s always good to catch up with a fellow PA hunter. For those of you who don’t know Mike, he’s a killer. Whether it’s public or private Mike consistently finds and kills mature deer. One of my favorite things about Mike is his curiosity, and how his expectations are rooted in reality. Mike’s been killing deer since the 90’s. We talk about his style has evolved over the years from a rut hunter to now an approach this is more focused on following the changing components of the deer’s world in the fall to stay in the game vs. sitting a funnel. One thing that hasn’t changed is the notion that the only way to get good at killing mature bucks…is to kill deer in general. Forced presence can provide fresh perspective. Zach (and The Hunting Public) are about the community, friends, and family. I think Zach said it best when he shared how this injury has help shape his perspective about hunting. Today I’m joined by my buddy Tim Carpenter. Tim is the owner and coach at Hellfisfish MMA. He’s been immersed in martial arts for nearly all of his life and is incredibly accomplished in every thing from Judo to BJJ and as a professional MMA fighter. If you’ve listened to this podcast for any length of time you likely know two things about me. My rekindled love of grappling/Jiu jitsu. And finding connection points among things that on the surface seem to not have much in common but share fundamental principals. I was surprised by how many folks who listen to the podcast are jiu jitsu practitioners. And BJJ and bow hunting whitetails is…well…not as different as some might think. There’s a lot of similarity between a killer in the whitetail woods and a killer on the jiu jitsu mats. The obvious is the dedication and passion to the craft. What is often overlooked is the elite performers in both are….experts in the fundamentals preferring substance over style. His 2021 season had some unexpected twists and turns while 2022 tested his resolve. What I most appreciate about Travis (beyond the fact that he is a killer in the whitetail woods) is he leads with his faith, always. Does the right thing which ins’t always the easy thing. And at the end of the day, he still usually ends up with a filled tag or two. He’s one of the best deer hunters you’ll find with inches to prove it. His strategies sometimes seem unorthodox initially…until he hangs Boone and Crocket deer on his wall…then everyone is all ears. He’s a trail blazer and what set’s him apart from other hunters is his mindset. Yes he’s a great strategist when it comes to locking and killing giant bucks.
